A colleague and I spent the last two days at Macaw Mountain in Copan Ruines getting prepared for an interesting project that will be starting at our school. Macaw Mountain is a parrot rescue, rehabilitation, and release center (macaws are in the parrot family). Jose and I toured the place with Lloyd, the founder of Macaw Mountain, met the vet who cares for the hurt macaws, saw the “nursery,” and had coffee while the scarlet macaws flew free around us. We then headed to the ruins and learned how to feed the macaws. Why you ask?
Because Macaw Mountain has built a macaw sanctuary on our school campus where we will care for twelve birds for the next several months. They will then be released in the wild, hopefully staying in the Gracias area. We have formed a Macaw Club at our school of students who will feed and care for them. Science classes will get to observe them and help document their behavior. And, all students will receive education about the macaws and participate in collecting food for them. We are hoping through education and with the backing of Macaw Mountain, MMt. and their outreach NGO organization, Pro-Wings, that macaws will safely fly around Honduras again. This is, honestly, an amazing project! We are thrilled to be a pilot program for Macaw Mountain, helping to work out the kinks so this type of program can be repeated elsewhere.

Kristi! This project looks amazing!?! I can’t wait to share with our girls. They love these exotic birds we are able to see on a pretty regular basis! This looks like a fantastic endeavor and hope you’re able to get more comfortable soon around these beautiful birds.
