When Tyler was a baby he had a shirt that said “Born to Read.” Shannon always laughed at it and said our children didn’t have a chance… and he was right. We have books in the living room, books in the bathroom, books in each bedroom. They are everywhere. Without realizing it, this has made all three children avid readers because they had access to books and it was a natural part of their life. However, this is not the case for the majority of Honduran families- even if they wanted it to be. This is a problem not just because I want my students to read but also because low reading affects every aspect of academics. Because of this, a project was started at our school to open a library. Teachers and many, many others have donated and brought down tons of books… so many, in fact, that we ran out of bookshelves- twice. Our students are reading, opening the doors to worlds beyond here and helping them to achieve their dreams academically.
